Ask the Volunteer
Q: WHY ARE YOU VOLUNTEERING FOR SHE LOVES DATA AND WHY YOU CHOOSE THIS CAUSE?
I’ve chosen to volunteer for She Loves Data because I’m deeply passionate about advocating for gender equality, especially in fields like data science and technology, where women are underrepresented. Seeing the potential of every individual, regardless of gender, to contribute to these innovative fields is not just a belief but a conviction that drives me every day. My journey in data science and technology has been both exhilarating and eye-opening. Yet, it’s been impossible to ignore the stark gender disparities that persist in these domains. It’s not just about numbers; it’s about the untapped potential, the unheard voices, and the perspectives that are yet to be explored.
Fostering A Can-Do Attitude: The Power of Empowerment in Data Science and Technology
Volunteering for She Loves Data for the past four years has been more than just an effort to close the gender gap—it’s been about kindling a flame of potential in every woman who envisions a future in technology and data, regardless of their background. Growing up in an all-female household, the notion of “Can we do it?” was never a question; it was ingrained in us as a steadfast “can-do” attitude.
This upbringing instilled in me a profound sense of empowerment and a desire to extend that empowerment to those who may not have experienced the same encouragement. It’s about enabling them to forge their own paths, shatter stereotypes, and redefine success in an industry which has not traditionally seen gender diversity.
Every training session, every mentoring opportunity, and every conversation is a chance to make a profound impact on someone’s life. It’s about instilling confidence, nurturing talent, and fostering a sense of belonging in a world that sometimes feels alienating.
But beyond statistics and metrics, it’s the stories of transformation that genuinely inspire me. It’s the moment when a participant’s eyes light up with understanding, the joy of overcoming challenges, and the sheer determination to excel against all odds. That’s the heart of why I volunteer—for those moments of connection, growth, and empowerment.
I've found a family in She Loves Data
In She Loves Data, I’ve found not just an organization, but a family—a community of passionate individuals driven by the same mission and values. Together, we’re not just bridging gaps, we’re building bridges to a future where everyone, regardless of gender, can thrive and succeed. Interacting with SLD members makes me realise that this is a calling, a chance to be part of something bigger than myself, to leave a legacy of empowerment and inclusion, and to make a lasting impact on the world around me.
