Q1) Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?
My name is Sara and I came to Ireland at the end of August 2022 to pursue my second master’s degree in data analytics. Before moving to Ireland, I lived in China and had a diverse career working in consulting, marketing, business, and public affairs for both individual companies and governments. Throughout my career, analytics and data analysis were always central to my roles. The desire to specialize in data analytics motivated me to seek opportunities abroad. I chose Ireland for its educational opportunities and potential career prospects in data analytics.
Q2) What was your journey like moving from China to Ireland in 2022? Can you share some of your experiences and challenges?
The need for a significant career change drove my journey to Ireland. During the pandemic, I felt the urgency to pursue my passion for data analysis. I used the time to research and prepare for my move. It was clear that I needed to take action. I searched for suitable educational programs and eventually decided on a master’s degree in data analytics in Ireland. The decision to migrate was also influenced by the desire to connect with a community that could support my professional growth.
Q3) How did you first hear about She Loves Data, and what drew you to get involved with the organization?
I discovered She Loves Data (SLD) while browsing online for communities related to data analysis. A story in Chinese media about a woman from the US who attended an SLD event caught my eye. Her journey mirrored mine—she was also transitioning to a new career in data analysis. Inspired by her experience, I decided to attend an SLD event myself. The event was about data analysis, and although I struggled to understand everything initially, the experience was incredibly motivating and made me feel more connected to the field.
Q4) What was your first experience with She Loves Data like, and how have your experiences evolved since then?
My first SLD event was an online session focused on data analysis. Despite the initial challenges in understanding the content, the experience was rewarding. I completed the assignments, earned a certificate, and felt accomplished. This motivated me to get more involved with SLD. I started volunteering for the Ireland chapter, which was just beginning. My experiences with SLD have been overwhelmingly positive. Volunteering has not only helped me develop my technical skills but also improved my critical thinking and communication abilities. The community’s support has been invaluable in my journey.
Q5) How has being a part of She Loves Data impacted your life and career?
SLD has had a transformative impact on my life and career. It provided a platform to connect with like-minded individuals and access valuable resources and knowledge. The skills and experience gained through SLD were crucial in securing my first job as an analyst at one of the biggest law firms in Ireland and my current role as an analyst. Volunteering with SLD helped me develop essential skills, such as critical thinking and teamwork, which have been instrumental in my professional growth. The community’s support and the opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects have significantly boosted my confidence and career prospects.
Q6) Is there anything else you’d like to share with us about your journey or your experiences with She Loves Data?
I believe that SLD can further expand its impact by increasing its presence on Chinese social media platforms. This would help reach more Chinese individuals living abroad who could benefit from such a supportive community. My journey with SLD has been incredibly rewarding, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in data analytics. Volunteering with SLD has allowed me to give back and help others on similar paths. The community’s dedication and support have been a source of inspiration, and I look forward to continuing my involvement with SLD to help it grow and make an even bigger impact.
